Face to Face/Michael McCurdy Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection documents the conception, publication, and sale of the wood engraving collection Face to Face: Twelve Contemporary American Artists Interpret Themselves in a Limited Edition of Original Wood Engravings, a project of Michael McCurdy and Robert Hauser, printed in 1985. The collaboration between the two printers as well as the professional activities of Michael McCurdy are also documented. The correspondence, dating from 1984-2013, describes the project Face to Face. The correspondence details agreements for the sale of the remaining editions in 2012, as well as the donation of the remaining editions to educational institutions. The prospectus for the original publication of the collection is also included, highlighting the hand-made print box and including reproductions of each of the thirteen limited edition prints.
Several publications by Michael McCurdy are also included in this collection, as well as photographs and a DVD of a television appearance.

Biographical / Historical
Robert Hauser studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) from 1963-1967 and then continued at Tufts University, finishing in 1973. He established Busyhaus Associates in 1974, providing exhibition services, research and educational programs, in addition to printing Hauser's publications in the book arts field.
Michael McCurdy attended SMFA from 1960-1966, and also went to Tufts University where he finished in 1971. McCurdy founded Penmaen Press in 1968, a literary fine arts press.
The concept of Face to Face was proposed by Hauser in 1983, and together he and McCurdy published it in 1985 in an edition of 250 boxed sets. Each set included an introduction by Leonard Baskin, a signed wood engraving by each of the twelve artists, and an engraving by Lynd Ward, to whom the collection was dedicated.
