Scope and Contents
This series contains 23 letters written by Mary and William Howitt that cover various writing and publishing projects, including Mary Botham Howitt's suggestions for illustrations and William Howitt's discussions on current work with his printer. Other topics from their personal lives include accepting and extending social invitations, their daughter's trip to the Holy Land, and their hope of meeting Alfred Lord Tennyson. Of interest is Mary Botham Howitt's letter to Charlotte Cushman recommending several of William's books, among them Rural life in England, and her translations of Fredrika Bremer's work. Also of interest is and William Howitt's letter discussing spiritualism. Also included in this series is a photograph of Mary Botham Howitt and William Howitt enclosed in a letter, and a photographic print of Mary Howitt alone.
