Scope and Contents
Arranged alphabetically.
This series chronicles the history of all performances given by the Society from its first production of Messiah in 1815 through Messiah sung in 1995. Also documented are featured soloists, special performances, and concert reviews. Scrapbooks dating from 1815-1914 contain programs of the first performances of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Judas Maccabeus and Verdi’s Requiem. Additional scrapbooks dating from 1834 to 1915 contain tickets, handbills, invitations, programs, and concert reviews. Also found in the scrapbooks is publicity about the Society’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 1865, Lowell Mason’s 100th Anniversary, the Beethoven Jubilee of 1870, Triennial Festivals, and the International Peace Congress. There is some overlap in dates between programs in folders and those bound in the scrapbooks.
