Correspondence, 1943-1989

 Series
Call Number: MS 5085, Series 1

Scope and Contents

This series reflects Holt’s interests in education reform and homeschooling. Topics include gifted and handicapped children, foreign language education, and the arts in education. Holt received letters from parents who chose to homeschool their children, students who found school unchallenging, and teachers who were inspired by his ideas. Many letters discuss problems with class sizes, ideas for individualized learning places, and reducing the amount of testing in public schools. Also addressed are self-education, organic learning, the imprisoning nature of public schools, and the legality of homeschooling. Much of the correspondence relates to the publication of Holt’s books, including Freedom and Beyond (1972) and Instead of Education (1976), and his newsletter Growing Without Schooling. The series also contains invitations for Holt to speak at various institutions, among them the Cato Speakers Forum in Political Economy and the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and requests for Holt to write for such publications as Instructor and Green Revolution. Additionally, Holt’s protest against the Vietnam War is documented, particularly in letters to Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator George McGovern, and Representative Thomas (“Tip”) O’Neill. Moreover, Holt’s interests in energy, evolution, health, music, psychology, and travel are documented. See also Series 3, Personal Appearances and Publicity, for more invitations for public appearances.
